Context
There's a lot of excitement about AI and robotics: back flips, kung fu moves, and more. But are these objects well designed, or technology demonstrators mistaken for products? Any other product category gets judged by market, user base, and product rationale. Robotics seem to be marching to a different tune, and it's not a likable one.
People are wired to read 'functional presence': what is this thing doing, is it dangerous, do I feel at ease with it? That first impression is ‘The Gestalt’ of the object, the immediate, visceral read of its purpose, relationship, and risk. It is the essence of the intelligent object: its Presence.
